Gaz Metro

In addition to the distribution of natural gas in Quebec and Vermont, Gaz Métro also owns a number of financial interests in transmission, storage, gas and other underground systems enterprises. Activities

Gaz Métro transports and distributes natural gas in Quebec, in Canada and the northeastern portion of North America. It also sells drinking and wastewater systems, urban heating plants, the maintenance and rental of energy equipment, and wind energy.

History

In April 2007, Gaz Métro celebrated its 50th birthday. It is exactly 118 years since manufactured gas was first used by Gaz Métro to light the streets of Montreal. At that time Gaz Métro was called the Natural Gas Corporation of Quebec. Ever since, Gaz Métro has been a pillar of Quebec’s energy industry.

The new corporate image unveiled in 2003 and the signature life in blue reflects a reality – Gaz Métro has been transformed. Visible externally, these changes are the result of a major shift that first began internally.

1955

Exactly 118 years after lamps using manufactured gas lit up the streets of Montreal, the Company would become known as Gaz Métro. At that time it was called the Natural Gas Corporation of Quebec.

1957

Québec Natural Gas Corporation acquires the manufactured gas system, which it then converted to natural gas, a less polluting and safer source of energy.

1969

Quebec Natural Gas Corporation changes its name to “Gaz Métropolitain”.

1980

La Régie de l’électricité et du gaz (which has since become La Régie de l’énergie) grants a franchise for Eastern Quebec to Gaz Inter-Cité Québec.

1985

Gaz Métropolitain acquires Gaz Inter-Cité Québec (which had the franchise for eastern Quebec) and Gaz Provincial du Nord (which served the Abitibi-Témiscamingue area).

1986

Gaz Métropolitain becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Noverco, a new company. La Caisse de dépôt and Soquip are the major shareholders.

1991

Gaz Métropolitain and Company, Limited Partnership is created on August 12.

1993

Gaz Métropolitain and Company, Limited Partnership (SCGM) becomes a public company.

1994

Gaz Métropolitain and Company, Limited Partnership acquires 50% of TransQuébec & Maritimes Pipeline Inc.

Gaz de France acquires interest in Noverco, which indirectly holds 80% of GMCLP.

1995

Canada-Québec government infrastructure programs make it possible to expand Quebec gas systems to 1,184 kilometers.

1997

Major change in shareholdings with Hydro-Québec and IPL Energy acquiring interestsin Noverco.

1998

The entry into service of TQM Pipeline extension to PNGTS reinforces natural gas supply for the Montreal, Montérégie and Eastern Township regions and makes it possible to move Canadian natural gas to the Northeastern USA.

2003

Gaz Métropolitain adopts a new image and a new logo. The name of the Company is now: Gaz Métro.

2004

Hydro-Québec sells its shares of Noverco to La Caisse de Dépôt. Trencap S.E.C. becomes the main shareholder of Noverco.

2007
