The History of Alta Flights Charters
David Robertson - President
Alta Flights Charters, Flight Tech Aviation and Shell Aerocentre
For David Robertson, it’s no coincidence that pilots and entrepreneurs are both considered mavericks - willing to take risks, ready to work hard to achieve the goal and the desire to be on top. David says, “I love flying and being able to take people where they need to go, but I also love dealing in sales and with people in business - hence, the creation of Alta Flights.”
To accomplish his dream, Alta Flights (Charters) Inc. was formed in 1986 by David and Christine Robertson out of Calgary with a Seneca and a Cessna 402 aircraft. With the demand for air charter out of Nisku, the company moved its Head Office to Edmonton in 1991. In 1994, Alta Flights purchased Flight Tech Aviation and the Shell Aerocentre. Then in 1998, a publicly traded Alberta oil services company, Telford Services Group, Inc., purchased 65% of Alta Flights Charters. A $4.5 million expansion of the facility in 1999 provided Alta Flights with over 27,000 square feet of hangar space and a top-notch building at the Edmonton International Airport. Currently, Alta Flights has bases in Edmonton and Calgary, a fleet of 30 aircraft worldwide and employs over 90 personnel.
David says, “We built this company on service and that means giving the customer what they want in a timely, reliable fashion. Alta Flights offers air charters anywhere in North America, plus we will also arrange hotels, ground transportation and anything else the client requires when traveling. With aircraft ranging from three to nineteen passenger turbo prop aircraft, we are able to service a variety of clients.”
“Now into its 21st Year, Alta Flights Charters is at the Top of its Game”
Much of Alta Flights’ business comes from the dynamic oil and gas industry. “With the oil and gas business growing so quickly in northern Alberta and even further north, I am looking forward to expanding our business, including investment in jet aircraft to help service that clientele” he says.
Part of the beauty of using a charter flight company as opposed to a commercial airline is that companies who need to respond quickly can be where they need to be in short order and safely. It’s also far more convenient for more remote locations. Alta Flights provides executive, cargo, crew change and hot-shot charters throughout North America. But it isn’t all business at Alta Flights. Golfing excursions, fishing trips and wine charters as well as corporate business trips are convenient and cost effective, allowing people the freedom to set their own schedules.
With 30 years of flying and entrepreneurship on his record, David notes that the greatest gratification is to have watched the company grow over the last two decades. “I’ve been able to watch this little company mature and benefit from steady growth. It has been a very rewarding journey.”
